Coal Ash Disposal
Hummingbird INK represented several communities across the country being sickened by pollution from coal ash — the toxic residues left after burning coal for power. We helped local advocates connect with both national and regional media, and put pressure on White House regulators to consider new regulations for the disposal of coal ash. Learn more about our efforts from the McClatchy Newswire, CBS Local Radio, and The Knoxville News-Sentinel.
Oil Industry Reform
The oil industry is notorious for resisting environmental and safety reforms. Following the gulf oil spill, one insider wrote the first book on the disaster, drawing attention to the necessary reforms that both government and industry were ignoring. To promote his refreshing call for change, Hummingbird INK connected environmental and energy reporters to the author and helped them further explore the corporate ethos and technical shortcuts that led to the spill. Read more in Bloomberg Businessweek, the New Orleans Times-Picayune and Houston Chronicle.
Fish Oil Supplement Safety
When scientists found incredibly dangerous amounts of PCBs in the most popular brands of fish oil supplements, they filed a lawsuit against eight companies for failing to provide accurate warnings on their labels. Working with RenewComm, Hummingbird INK promoted a press call to national outlets and worked with reporters at local outlets to accurately share details of the suit with their readers. Read the stories Hummingbird INK successfully placed with ABC7 – San Francisco, the Twin Forks Herald Extra, and the San Jose Mercury News.

Water Resources
When a group of fishermen approached Hummingbird INK, Sean Hannity was on the way to the West coast to rant against environmental protections that sought to restore water for ecosystems and fisheries. We quickly responded to his broadcast with strategic messaging and an editorial campaign. Read our editorial successfully placed in the Sacramento Bee.
College Admissions
Facing overworked public school counselors and increasingly expensive private ones, iAdmissions gathered experienced admissions officers from well-known universities in 2009 to help students get the feedback they need to get into college. Hummingbird INK crafted advice pieces to provide thoughtful college admissions tips while promoting iAdmissions.com to college applicants and their families. Read these pieces on The Wall Street Journal’s ‘Unigo.com,’ The Washington Post’s ‘Admissions 101,’ and CollegeBound.net.
Coalition Building
Safe Schools
Hummingbird INK coordinates a coalition of over twenty national organizations that address school climate policy and curriculum. We research and analyze news trends, coordinate communications, and develop networks to advance the movement to address anti-gay bias among youth.
Bullying Prevention
Hummingbird INK has experience coordinating a national effort to provide free workshops to educators and social workers. We planned training events and represented the coalition with external partners. Communicating with members at organizations such as the National Education Association and Child Welfare League of America, we provided resources to address bullying and bias among youth.
Newsletters
Hummingbird INK was approached by GroundSpark, a national film production and educational non-profit, to facilitate the creation of a semi-annual newsletter. Hummingbird INK worked with GroundSpark staff to draft and edit copy, and coordinated its design and printing with Pink Top Design. Download the newsletter here.
